Adding friends to Netflix and watching movies together might increase Netflix's user base and revenue and increase the traffic of Netflix sites.



THE PROCESS

BACKGROUND
COVID-19 has altered how people satisfy social needs and caused more people to consume media from home.
Instead of going to a movie, concert, or sports event, people are more likely to stream something at home. As a result, many people have turned to digital venues to satisfy their social needs, and more people subscribe to streaming services such as Netflix as a new entertainment lifestyle.



RESEARCH
Thinking about how we can help people socialize and have significant interactions while enjoying movies on Netflix? I dived deeper to conduct interviews and surveys.

How might we provide an engaging co-viewing environment to Netflix subscribers?
OPPORTUNITY
USER PERSONA
I took all my learning from research and these user personas came to my mind. By organizing user persona, I recalled that “who am I designing for.” By understanding the expectations, concerns, and motivations of target users, it’s possible to design a product that will satisfy users’ needs


Giving people a chance to co-watching Netflix movies or TV will also enlarge the Netflix community. As a result, it will bring more subscribers and revenue to the company.
COMPETITIVE RESEARCH
I learned about some other streaming services which can support co-viewing. I found some good points and some disadvantages.


Important findings
1. During competitive research, I found that these co-watching applications have the same condition; the chatting area will take up space. However, users will lose the spacious full-screen movie experience.
3. During competitive research, I found that some users don't want to spend much time typing in the chat sidebar.
2. During competitive research, I found that some users like to hide the chat sidebar but still join the communication.

-Increase engagement and sense of privilege.

-Setting everything in My theater section.
-Once sent the invitation code, the inviter can check who was accepted.
-Before the movie starts, people can join the waiting room to have fun and communicate.

Waiting room & trivia questions
-While waiting for the movie to start, friends can play a trivia question game.
-Play the trivia question game and get a correct answer, users can get 'Netpoint', and these points
will use to invite friends to your theater next time.

Communication & Smart reply
-Chat with friends through the sidebar.
-Smart reply is a one-click reply. Users choose the predictive words to give a quick reply.
-See the messages scrolling across the screen even hiding the sidebar.

Next step
Interact with friends with augmented reality!
AR effect
Since Netflix has plans to build an app for Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality headset.
AR effect will give users more robust engagement and more immersive social streaming experiences.
